The bus exploded in a crowded bus stop near the bus station in Jerusalem today, killing one woman and wounding at least two dozen more. The explosion was apparently caused by a bomb bag left near the railway station. This was the first attack in Jerusalem for four years. No group has proposed to take responsibility.
The threat of terrorist attacks were part of life in Israel as long as I can remember. I remember a child and afraid to go there. I remember talking to the Israelis fear of living in a place like Jerusalem and even Tel Aviv, where a terrorist nightmare can happen at any time.
It turns out that we have learned since 2001 that we all live in a place where something terrible can happen at any time. Maybe there is something we can learn to live with uncertainty for people who are always approve of uncertainty.
In the wake of 9 / 11 when we tried to understand the nuances of the new life with anxiety, I thought the Israelis. Israel residents to develop and nurture their children and how this particular risk is part of the equation. How do you feel about that? The majority of Israelis I interviewed on the subject are generally much was not expected. Sometimes, avoiding places they regard as particularly at risk for one reason or another. Overall, the main tactic seems to be: If it happens, it happens. I can not do anything to prevent it. So why should I do to destroy my life?
This attitude is perhaps more difficult for Americans to swallow, because exposure to this risk is still too new to our shores. But recent events have been more afraid of what we already know: our ability to protect against disasters, whether by terrorists or natural causes, is unfortunately limited. Maybe they should focus on limiting the amount of anxiety about the parts of the good life for our family. I know I'll try.
